After Christmas Online Returns & Gift Cards

Well, Christmas is over, and you got a bunch of great presents, and a few, not so great ones.  What should you do?

It’s very likely your presents were bought online.  Online sales were up 16% from 2011 to 2012* in the week leading up to Christmas.

If the item was bought online, make sure you read the fine print about returns.

1.  Can you return it to a brick and mortar store?  In some cases, you can only return items that were bought online back to the online fulfillment center.  Make sure you are aware of this before waiting on a 20 person line.

2. Are returns included? Online retailers, like Zappos, offer free returns, but if they don’t, you don’t want to spend $10 just to return a $25 item.

3.  Is it returnable?  Make sure the item wasn’t final sale.

What about gift cards?  Maybe you prefer cold hard cash?

  • You can sell your gift cards on sites like PlasticJungle, Cardpool & GiftCardGranny.
  • Make sure you register your gift cards online.  Sometimes you lose a card and that money is lost.  Register them here
  • Use mobile apps to consolidate all your gift cards; Gyft and Clutch are two.
  • 40% of gift card recipients don’t use the total value of the card.  Don’t let this happen to you!
